Dear
Barb, y
young children
:k
watch a lot of
TV. I'm con-
cerned about
their weight. Is there any correla-
tion between them watching TV
and weight gain? Thanks, Laurie.

A friWQ r: Dear Laurie, You are
right to be concerned. A number
of studies have shown that, un-
doubtedly, there is a correlation
between overweight children/ado-
lescents and the amount of time
they spend in front of a screen
watching TV/dvd's, playing video
games, and spending time on the
internet.

If you've been a regular reader
of this column, you know that
excessive childhood and
adolescent weight gain can
have very serious health
consequences that extend
t'fi'i 1 through adulthood.

The American Academy
of Pediatrics makes the
\ following recommenda-
• ) tons (among others):
• Set limits. Limit your
children's use of TV,
.
movies, and video/com-
puter games to no more
than 1 or 2 hours per day.
Do not let your children watch
TV while doing homework. Do
not put a TV in your children's
bedrooms.
• Give other options. Help children
find other things to do like play-
ing; reading; learning a hobby, a
sport, an instrument, or an art;
or spending time with family,
friends, or neighbors.
