Dr. Friedlaender was a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and the American Academy of Allergy. He chaired many of the academy's research committees and served as vice president. He was the recipient of the academy's Distinguished Service Award. He was also founding director and secretary of the American Board of Allergy and Immunology and served as editor in chief of the journal Immunology and Allergy Practice and as a national media spokesperson, educating the public about allergic diseases on radio and television programs throughout the country. He was honored by Wayne's School of Medicine with its Distinguished Alumni Award. He published over 60 scientific papers in basic and clinical research. Dr. Friedlaender was married to Dorothy Blum, a registered nurse, whom he met while training in Baltimore. They were married for 55 years, until her death. During World War II, Dr. Friedlaender served as a captain in the Army Medical Corps in the South Pacific. He is survived by his chil- dren, Roslyn Levy of Gainesville, Mitchell of La Jolla and Robert of Washington; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren. He was husband of the late Dorothy; brother of the late Alex Friedlaender and the late Sara Stern. Memorial services and interment were in Gainesville. HAROLD "HANK" GLUCKMAN, 81, of Farmington Hills, died Oct. 20, 2008, from natural causes at Royal Oak Beaumont Hospital. He was a retired local interior designer. He began his career in Detroit in the 1950s, working in dis- play at the J.L. Hudson Company. He then became the head of Hudson's display department towards the end of the decade and was responsible for opening both Eastland and Northland malls. At Northland, he was responsible for hand-painting one of the largest murals in North America. In 1960, Mr. Gluckman opened his own design firm, Gluckman Designs, and was responsible for designing a number of local landmarks, most notably the Fox & Hounds restau- rant, the original Stage & Company delicatessen and Ladbrokes Detroit Race Course clubhouse.
