THE BEST OF EVERYTHING
Here And There
And everywhere from O'Brien's stone crabs to chocolate lovers, etc.
p
OTPOURRI ... The time has
come for lovers who wait for
this all year ... the Florida stone
crab season ... At O'Brien's Crabhouse
on Opdyke in Auburn Hills, owner Dan
Dunsky has the large jumbo and colossal
claws fresh and yummy now through the
Thanksgiving holiday period ... He serves
them at O'Brien's with mustard sauce and
sweet potato fries.
Dan's year-round spicy Maryland spe-
cial crab soup is a fine accompaniment,
loaded with crab and vegetables that make
it a huge favorite, as are his Maryland Blue
Crabs, not seen on too many menus, that
Dan has sent in directly from Chesapeake
Bay ... O'Brien's snow crabs, in season
from Oct. 15 to April 15, are served fresh
during this time and then frozen during
the year ... King crab, Dungeness and soft
shell crabs, in season May and June, are
also frozen and served all year ... Don't
know anyplace else in this region that has
Ipswich clams, whole, fried and served as
prepared in Boston where Ipswich popu-
larity is endless.
IT HAS BEEN over 10 years since
they moved to Tamarac, Fla., and a great
surprise when the call came from a lady
living in Omena, Mich. ... She had been
searching for the Omena Inn couple and
thrilled at finally finding them ... They
talked of the old times and the shows she
saw at the hotel owned by Harold Landis
and his parents, and of its singer, Wyn
Garden, who he later married ... Omena
was having its 150th birthday celebration
and they were asked to do a musical and
narrative program.
But Wyn and Harold Landis are known
by numerous folks for much
more than their singing abili-
ties ... Theirs are wonderful
names out of the past ... Many
people continue to remember
Wyn and Harold running the
kitchen and dining room at the
Harbor Bar, owned by short,
stocky and red-haired Leo Adler
and his wife Debbie on a dock
that surrounded a small marina
on the Detroit River at the foot
of Fairview in Detroit, directly
opposite the head of Belle Isle ... On hot
summer evenings it was a great place to
go for a cooling drink while the waves
slapped at the pilings and the dock swayed
gently when the big ships cruised by.
Wyn and Harold had a very small kitch-
en at the Harbor Bar, but it didn't stop
them from making terrific hamburgers,
like their Commodore Special, and lus-
cious cheese blintzes ... They also served
a dilly of a tenderloin filet, chops and vari-
ety of sandwiches ... Their blintzes, tiny,
flaky pancakes wrapped around a cream
or cottage cheese filling, topped with sour
cream or strawberry jam, were highly
desired orders ... Between Harbor Bar
and their Wyn and Harold Catering opera-
tion, they made well over many hundreds
of thousands of blintzes.
YES, THAT'S THE same Tony Shustari
who now owns Loccino Italian restaurant
at the former site of The Palm, Crooks
Road north of 1-75, Troy ... He was the
former boss guy with brother Frank at
Alfoccino on Haggerty and grand River,
Farmington Hills ... And the same gent
who almost 30 years ago was a waiter for
Ella Mitchell at the original
Mitch's in Keego Harbor.
EXECUTIVE CHEF Lee
Sharkas at Shenandoah
Country Club, Walnut Lake
Road, West Bloomfield, is
seeing numerous guys and
gals from his days head-
ing the kitchen at Andiamo
West, Bloomfield Township
... Lee's food is enjoyed by
many since membership is
not needed to have an affair
in Shenandoah's 800-capacity banquet
.
MOM.
HELLO FROM Chef Takashi Yagihashi,
former Tribute executive chef, now cook-
ing up a storm at his own place, Takashi,
on North Daman in Chicago ... When in
Chicago, you might want to see if he still
has dishes like Nantucket scallops with
duck confit and white truffle oil, or grilled
Maine salmon in miso-ginger sauce ...
While here he was big on French cuisine
with an Asian touch.
MAIL DEPT. ... "I may be a choco-
holic, but I'm still very particular when
it comes to excellent chocolates. In all
the years I have yet to find any better
than the candy at Sweet Essentials on 12
Mile in Berkley, Ph blocks west of the
Berkley Theater. The owners, Debby and
Gary Schlicker and Lisa Peasley, were just
kids when they worked at Sydney Bogg's
Chocolate Factory on Woodward and Six
Mile, known for its terrific chocolates.
They worked side-by-side with Sydney,
and helped him put out the great choco-
lates that my wonderful late husband,
Stanley Winkelman, used to bring me on
Valentine's Day, Sweetest Day, Chanukah
and any holiday he could think up.
"Debbie, Gary and Lisa at Sweet
Essentials are making the same delectable
chocolates exactly according to Sydney's
wonderful recipes. Customers sample
their chocolates and if they want to remi-
nisce, the owners love to talk about those
"good old days" ... Margaret "Peggy"
Winkelman.
REMEMBERING Dept. ... By former
localite Joe Cornell in California ... When,
as Joe Coronella, he double-dated with
community-ite Jerry Gerger and his date,
cheerleader Edna Gillooly, at the prom of
their Cass Technical High graduating class
... Today, she plays the role of Barbara
Bush in the Oliver Stone-directed movie,
W. with Josh Brolin, Barbra Streisand's
step-son, as former President George W.
Bush ... Edna today is better known as
Academy Award winner Ellen Burstyn
(Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore, directed
by Martin Scorcese).
