75th Anniversary Balfour Celebration Overcoming from page A38 espouses Zionism — specifically a Zionism as a movement of con- quest and domination — neither One-State nor Two-State will be viable." When I read the papers and books by the Sabeel presenters, it is a different history than the history that I have learned. When you and I learned about the British Mandate and the War of Independence, they learned of the nakba, the great catastrophe. When you and I learned about the war of 1967 and how the Israelis fought back when they were attacked, this group knew only of the Israeli aggression of land grab. When you and I knew that the Israelis were looking for a peace partner with the Palestinian Authority, this group felt that the Israelis were trying to figure out how to get all the land for them- selves. Conferences like this should give us a jolt, and I issue a serious warning. I work with campuses all over the state of Michigan and I am saddened at the lack of information our students have about Israel. I am even more upset at how little many of them care. Our students are ill equipped to answer questions in class when a far-left professor raises issues about the Israeli/Palestinian con- flict. There is a small group of activists on each campus, but the majority of university and college students on Michigan campuses don't know enough about Israel. Speak to your children! Call the Jewish advocacy organizations in Metro Detroit or on campus to learn how you can acquire mate- rials for your students. Many of the colleges and universities in Michigan have good or outstanding Jewish programs. We would all like to see peace in Israel. We hope some day there can be a two-state solution. But we need to be pro-active and knowledgeable and we need to move towards this goal sooner than later.
