Israel: New Elections
Jerusalem/JTA — Israel will hold new
general elections, President Shimon
Peres confirmed. Peres made his
announcement at the opening of the
Knesset winter session Monday after-
noon, saying there was no chance of
forming a new government coalition.
He made the decision after meeting
Monday morning with the heads of
the party factions, most of whom sup-
ported early elections.
"This is the time for Israel's Knesset
and political system to do some deep
soul-searching," Peres told the Knesset.
"It is never too late to fix mistakes!'
The Israeli parliament now has up
to three weeks to dissolve itself and set
an election date, which will likely be
February or early March.
Israelis: McCain Best
Jerusalem/JTA — Israelis would elect
John McCain over Barack Obama for
president of the United States, a poll
found. The poll found that 46.4 per-
cent of Israelis would vote for McCain,
the Republican candidate, and 34
percent for his Democratic opponent,
with 18.6 undecided, Ynet reported
Monday. The survey, conducted by
the TNS Teleseker polling agency on
behalf of the Rabin Center for Israel
Studies, interviewed 500 Israelis aged
18 to 65.
Nazi Massacre Trial
Munich/JTA — A former German sol-
dier is on trial in Munich for Nazi-era
atrocities. Josef Scheungraber, now
90, is charged with having ordered the
murders of 14 villagers in June 1944 as
a reprisal for partisans killing two of
his men. Scheungraber was sentenced
to life in prison by an Italian court
in 2006, but since Germany does not
extradite its citizens, a trial was initi-
ated in Munich in September.
A witness in one of the last trials
related to Nazi-era atrocities told the
Munich court on Oct. 23 that his fellow
German soldiers balked at massacring
Italian villagers in Falun°, Tuscany,
but followed orders. The next court
date is Nov. 13.
In September, Scheungraber's attor-
ney told the court that the accused —
who lives today in Ottobrunn, Bavaria
— had not known about the massacre
when it happened.

Syria Raps U.S. Raid
Damascus/JTA — Damascus con-
demned a U.S. helicopter attack inside
Syria that killed eight. The raid report-
edly occurred Sunday afternoon in
al-Boukamal, about six miles from
the border with Iraq. An Iraqi gov-
ernment spokesman said Monday
that the raid targeted an area used
by insurgents to plan attacks on Iraq.
Syrian officials said only civilians were
killed when the helicopter attacked a
building under construction. U.S. State
Department officials and U.S. military
officials in Iraq have not commented
on the raid. The U.S. military has
increased security on the Iraq-Syria
border in recent months in an effort to
halt the movement of fighters, includ-
ing suicide bombers, and weapons into
Iraq, the Washington Post reported.
Shades Of Hitler?
Berlin/JTA — A German economist
compared the recent criticism of bank
managers with the anti-Semitism of
the 1930s in Germany. The Central
Council of Jews in Germany has
demanded an apology from economist
Hans-Werner Sinn, the president of
the German Ifo Institute for Economic
Research.
Sinn is quoted in Monday's edition
of Berlin's Tagesspiegel newspaper as
saying that "in every crisis there are
guilty parties sought, scapegoats!' Sinn
went on to say that Jews in Germany
were blamed for the worldwide eco-
nomic crisis of 1929, "and today it is
the managers!'
Stephan Kramer, the Central
Council's general secretary, told the
New Ruhr /Rhein Times Monday that
the comparison was "outrageous,
absurd and absolutely out of place
"It would be news to me that bank
managers were beaten up, murdered
or confined in concentration camps;'
Kramer said.
German Mea Culpa Stalled
Berlin/JTA — Party politics doomed a
resolution in the German parliament
that condemned anti-Semitism.
The resolution, meant to mark the
70th anniversary of the Kristallnacht
pogrom against Jews and their prop-
erty in Germany and Austria, would
have been the latest in a series of reso-
lutions against anti-Semitism passed
by the Bundestag in recent years. But a
multi-party working group was unable
to agree on the wording.
The right-conservative and left-
wing parties long have been reluctant
to agree on such issues. Problems
reportedly arose when the Christian
Democratic Union and its sister party
tried to insert text specifically delin-
eating examples of anti-Semitism in
the former communist East Germany.
