nswer: Dear Emma, The
International Journal of
Sport Nutrition and Exer-
cise Metabolism recently reported
on a small-scale study (funded in
part by the dairy industry), which
found that low-fat chocolate milk
matched Gatorade in replenish-
ing endurance capabilities after
vigorous exercise (cycling).

Surprisingly, the chocolate milk
proved 50% more effective in
replenishing endurance than
Endurox R4, which has a similar
carbohydrate-to-protein ratio.

Sports drinks rely on rapid
replacement of glycogen
(stored glucose/carbs) and
.. 1. , restoration of electrolyte
balance to the body.
'
Casual athletes may
i 1 i
not benefit the same as
\ . ' competitive athletes do.

Dear
Bar , me-
one told me
that chocolate
milk may be as
good a sports
drink as Gatorade and the newer
"added-protein" brands like En-
