To say Book Beat is a treasure hunt is putting in mildly. At Street Corner Music, in business since 1992, they specialize in hard-to- find jazz, R&B, rock, Motown, blues and Detroit music. In addition to new CDs, the store carries a large selection of "un-abused" vinyl records. A short drive north of Book Beat, just south of 11 Mile and set back from a fast-food joint, is a retailing curiosity, at least in these parts, where big savings are guaranteed every day. It's not a warehouse club along the lines of a Costco. And it certainly is not a mass merchant in the vein of a Target or Wal-Mart. Nor is it a discounter like Tuesday Morning or Marshall's. Rather, it's a German import known as Aldi (26300 Greenfield, and www. aldifoods.com for hours and other locations). And while the savings are real inside the tidy, no-frills store, today's bargain may be tomorrow's disappearing act as the selection changes like the wind, or more pre- cisely, depending on what deals its buyers can uncover. From grocery basics, wine and imported chocolate to perishables, pet food and school supplies, Aldi may take some getting used to, but, much like the street it calls home, its quirki- ness is its appeal. Other stores in the area worth a look include Z Coil (29775 Northwestern, 248-350-3815), where specially engi- neered walking and hiking shoes are expertly fitted to ensure maximum comfort and aid in the reduction of foot pain, and Total Runner (29207 Northwestern Hwy., 248-354-1177), for running accouterment fit for mara- thoners and beginners alike. If running isn't your sport of choice, but hitting the links is, you might want to get some pointers from the coaches at Golf Tec (29203 Northwestern Hwy., 248-827-4653), who utilize specialized video and motion analysis technology to assess your golf swing and improve your ball-striking abilities. Not to be outdone in the shoe department, the granddaddy of metro area shoe stores, Mr. Alan's Super
