Danny's Measure

How me to share a small his-
tory of my family that will
give you the real story of
Danny Raskin.
My grandfather came to this coun-
try from Sicily; he spent 99 percent
of his life as a local bartender. I was
fortunate enough to grow up spend-
F. Kevin
ing most days having lunch with him
Browett
(he was the best cook ever), and
Jewish
later, before he passed away, I was
Renaissance
his bouncer at the bar.
Media
I found he was not the bartender
but, rather, the community connection, often marriage
counselor, child psychologist, financial adviser and
sometimes just a friend to talk to.
He made connections with the community night
after night, and his kind ear and tough talk were what
made him loved and invaluable to many.
So now to Danny: He has the rare honor and reputa-
tion of being part of the community and our company
for 66 years. Wow, 66 years! That alone in today's
world is amazing; 66 days is huge in some worlds.
Then there is the fact that he has never missed a
week, never missed an issue — that is almost 3,500
weeks of columns. All this and each week and day he
shows up dressed for the best-dressed list for busi-
ness people: full suit, tie and sharp as a tack. What
can one say about that accomplishment?
What he does most is give us much more than a
weekly restaurant review; he gives us a family history.
He tells us about the restaurant, but much more about
the community, the owners, the families and why they
do what they do. They have successes and failures;
many have come back or survived and Danny gives us
that with the menu. We get the people and why they
do the business.
What we get with Danny Raskin is not just what is
delicious but what is human, what is real and why we
go; not just for the food but for the people that have
made the business work.
Danny, I look forward to seeing you each day and so
does the community you touch and bring to life with
what you do — not a restaurant review column, but a
slice of life we all love and look forward to each week.
May these weeks go on for many more years. Thank
you for 66 years of touches and almost 90 years of
being Danny Raskin, the legend! ❑
