Dear
Bar ,
ear
all kinds of
different terms
applied to car-
bohydrates. It's
confusing. Can you help? Grace.

A

nswer Dear Grace, Here's
a list of the buzz words
and phrases associated
with carbohydrates that I'm aware
of (with a short explanation):
• Unrefined carbs: carbohydrates
found in their natural/raw state
before processing;
• Refined carbs: the opposite of
unrefined carbs—i.e., carbohy-
drates that have been processed
(usually to increase shelf life or
to "improve" taste), which often
results in the nutrients and
fiber being stripped out;
• Low carb: a food manu-
,<:„ facturing (as opposed to
\ legal) term—low carb
refers to any food item
/
claimed to be relatively
low in carbohydrates
k
(caution: often a "low
carb" item is high in fat
and calories);
• Net carbs: a term not
approved by the FDA,
which indicates remaining
carbs in an item after excluding
sugar alcohols, fiber, glycerin,
and other substances (the theory
being that the excluded items to
do not raise blood sugar)—not
consistently used/applied;
• Carb fit/carb wise/carb smart:
food manufacturers' terms often
used synonymously with "low
carb." I hope this helps answer
your question.
