unlike its former, longtime home, the
new location is so much brighter and
spacious.
There's also the much adored, funky
Cinderella's Attic (420 E. Frank,
248-593-6678), which reopened in
Birmingham after a much-missed
absence from the area retail landscape,
the pink-fronted Bella Belli (790 N.
Old Woodward, 248-203-2220) for
always stylish maternity clothing
and accessories, Green's (400 S. Old
Woodward, 248-644-1644), the place
for all manner of art supplies, and a
"green" retailer of another sort, Root
& Sprout (474 N. Old Woodward, 248-
593-9552), which calls itself an "eco
boutique!'
There's also Harp's Lingerie (265
S. Old Woodward, 248-642-2555),
where the legendary Mrs. Harp con-
tinues to hold court over a retinue
of expert saleswomen and an always
grateful clientele, while over at Optik
Birmingham (245 W. Maple, 248-646-
6699), Dr. Joe Ales stocks the largest
collection of authentic, never-worn
vintage eyewear in the state, not to
mention some groovy artwork and
an impeccable selection of vintage
Bakelite accessories.
What they lack in space they more
than make up for content- and exper-
tise-wise: Right off the Sheep (395
S. Old Woodward, 248-646-7595)
specializes in knitting supplies, while
Simply Wine (180 Pierce St., 248-290-
0476), thankfully, takes the snobbery
out of buying a bottle of vino.
In the mood to treat yourself?
Nothing beats being captivated by the
brilliant jewelry and fine timepieces at
Universal Watch and Jewelry (177 S.
Old Woodward, 248-723-5550), Back
in Time (227 S. Old Woodward, 248-
540-4646), Astrien's (120 W. Maple,
248-644-1651), David Wachler &
Sons (100 S. Old Woodward, 248-540-
4622), Halina Fuchs (222 E. Maple,
248-540-4500), Stefani & Co. (534
N. Old Woodward, 248-258-8818),
Grinstein (162 S. Old Woodward,
248-647-4414), or Greenstone's (528
N. Old Woodward, 248-642-2650), or
perusing the racks of rich furs and
supple leather at Ceresnie & Offen
(181 S. Old Woodward, 248-642-1690).
Finally, take a whirl through the
myriad of Birmingham's home and
design stores, where the styles range
from the avant garde at Linge Rosset
(275 S. Old Woodward, 248-723-2500)
and iconic modern — Eames chair,
anyone? — at Design Within Reach
(168 W. Maple, 248-593-9640), to the
California casual of Quatrine (254 W.

Maple, 248-644-4705), the eclectic col-
lections at the cavernous Arhaus (202
N. Old Woodward, 248-258-8813),
and the updated traditional looks
from either Ethan Allen (275 N. Old
Woodward, 248-540-8558) or Baker
(34500 Woodward, 248-593-9608),
plus the last word in bathroom accou-
terment: Waterworks (241 Merrill,
248-593-9485).
As well, don't forget to admire the
artistry of the fine Oriental rugs from
Azar's (670 S. Old Woodward, 248-
644-7311) and Hagopian (850 S. Old
Woodward, 248-646-7847).
And for just the right touch, whether
it be a picture frame or whimsical
tchotchke, the chicly rustic Italian
Dish (288 E. Maple. 248-593-8299)
and Lilliputian-sized Art Loft (203 E.
Maple, 248-647-4007) are most defi-
nitely worth a look.
Then, head east along Maple to
South Eton and discover the nascent
Rail District, where you'll find African
gifts and home accessories, includ-
ing hand-painted Penzo pottery from
Zimbabwe and Ngwenya recycled
hand-blown glass from Swaziland at
Ellie Beans (2026 Hazel, 248-646-
3566), or the decidedly preppy home
decor items at the relocated Fuchsia
Frog (2123 Cole St., 248-203-6550);
the finest European and American
modern furniture — Minotti, Fritz
Hansen, Poliform, Herman Miller and
more — at Arkitektura (2131 Cole
St., 248-646-0097); colorful yarns
and knitting supplies at Gail's Darn
Yarn (2028 Hazel, 248-593-9288);
and Watch Hill Antiques (645 S.
Eton, 248-644-7445) and Designers
Wall (707 S. Eton, 248-203-2707) for
home accessories, antiques and design
services. Also, the newly relocated
Colorworks, (2159 Cole Street, 248-
647-4000).
A few miles west of town, you'll find
SHE (4076 West Maple, Bloomfield
Township) for contemporary and
designer clothing and accessories.

ARTS + CULTURE

Indeed, today's downtown
Birmingham art scene isn't quite as
robust as it was say 20, even 10 years
ago. But that's not to say what's there
should be overlooked. On the contrary,
the galleries calling the neighborhood
home carry impressive pedigrees, and
even more impressive collections.
Among those right in town are
David Klein Gallery (163 Townsend
Street, 248-433-3700), Robert Kidd
Gallery (107 Townsend Street, 248-
642-3909), Hill Gallery (407 West
