A Special Salute

I is not often enough that we can pay
tribute to a colleague and friend who
has meant so much to Detroit's Jewish
community and the community at large.
Our MainStreets section this year is devot-
ing its cover story to Danny Raskin, who
has been observing the Detroit area's main
streets on behalf of the Jewish News for 661/2
years and will mark his 90th birthday in
January. Over the years, Danny's weekly col-
umns in the Jewish News have become the
Danny Raskin, 1943
bible of where to eat, where to go and what
to do and, more importantly, a glimpse into the lives of the people
who make those places and events happen or participate in them.
Danny's record has been amazing, and what more appropriate
place to pay tribute to him than in our annual section devoted to
restaurants, shopping and entertainment in the Detroit area. Our
award-winning MainStreets section has been written for the last
four years by Ed Nakfoor, a retail consultant in Birmingham. Ed
has exhaustively surveyed the area to bring us the latest news about
where to go and what to do. And the section includes beautiful pho-
tographs by IN Staff Photographer Angie Baan,
artfully displayed by Senior Graphic Designer
Lindsay Schwartz.
So enjoy our tribute to Danny Raskin, a Jewish
News and Detroit tradition, and our informative
MainStreets.
