Metro AROUND TOWN All-Day Sukkah Soiree Community Sukkot celebration held in Birmingham's Shain Park. Alan Borman of Birmingham and Oscar, 14 months F rom sun-up to sundown, parents, children, students and young adults made themselves at home inside a special sukkah built by the Birmingham Bloomfield Chai Center in Birmingham's Shain Park. In the early afternoon, about 300 people gathered for "pizza in the hut" with food, music and crafts for families. "It was an incredible turnout:' said Jennifer Levine, direc- tor of the Young Adult Division of the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit. "The kids made miniature sukkot with graham crackers, frosting, coconut and licorice. We also served green "lulav shakes" made with lime sherbet and sprite. They were a big hit!" When the parents and children headed home, Rabbi livi Muller from Partners in Torah of Yeshiva Beth Yehudah in Southfield took over. He led a study session under the stars fol- lowed by a sukkah bar night for about 125 young adults which moved over to the Birmingham Community House. The daylong event Oct. 16 dubbed "Shakin' it in Shaid was a kick off for the newly named Kehillah (community in Hebrew) Young Adult Council. The group recently formed to address the problem of young adults moving away from Metro Detroit. Participating synagogues and organizations included the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, Adat Shalom, Beth Ahm, Beth El, B'nai Moshe, B'nai B'rith, Hillel of Metro Detroit, U-M Hillel, JCC, NS, Partners in Torah, Shaarey Zedek, Temple Israel, Shir Shalom, Young Israel of Oak Park and YAD. The event was sponsored by the Blumenstein Family Young Adult Fund. "The main objective of Kehillah is to engage and attract young people and provide them with affordable social events where they can meet other like-minded Jewish young adults to network and build a stronger community," said Levine. "The success of this event proves our young leaders are ready and willing to come together. I'm confident Kehillah will become an entity that will help sustain the community in the years to come."
