Shapiro of West Bloomfield has been added as a senior accountant at the local CPA and advisory firm of MSW Group PLC. She primarily serves health- care organizations and family-owned businesses providing expertise in account- ing and tax solutions. She is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Michigan Association of Certified Public Accountants. Karen Katanick of the University Liggett School in Grosse Pointe was one of 50 educators selected to attend the National Gallery of Art's 2008 Teacher Institute on 17th-century Dutch Katanick art. The two six-day sem- inars in July and August brought together teachers of art, social studies and related subjects from 22 states. They explored ways, including image-enhanced podcasting, to integrate art into the classroom. Howard and Steven Tapper are extending their appeal to keep children safe and warm not just to families, but also teachers. In a letter to local teachers, the Tappers wrote: "You who are on the front lines every day, working to meet the challenge of educating our chil- dren see with your very eyes the seri- ous need that exists in so many of our communities. Too many children of all ages, shapes and sizes come to school without any protection from our cold Michigan winters:' This year, Tapper's is focusing on Detroit Public Schools students, where the need is greater than ever. But needy students and charitable organi- zations throughout the area also will be beneficiaries. The need for winter outer wear far exceeds what's normally available for kids, according to what the Tappers have discovered. "With your help, by spreading the word, and helping us get out the mes- sage the Tappers wrote in their letter to teachers, "we hope to ensure that every student who is in need has a C8 October 23 • 2008 rr warm coat this winter." The 2008 goal is to collect at least 1,000 gently used coats (all sizes wel- come) as well as new hats, gloves, mit- tens and scarves. Steve Tapper pegs the total collec- tion over the years to be 16,000. Cash donations will go toward the purchase of new coats and winter clothing. This year, Tapper's is working with these local humanitarian agencies: Baldwin Church Center and Grace Centers of Hope in Pontiac, Orchard's Children's Services in Southfield and the local chapter of Kids Kicking Cancer. Dr. Jordan M. Maier of Birmingham, a radiation oncologist, joined the Detroit-based Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Center as medical director of its Weisberg Cancer Treatment Maier Center in Farmington Hills. He is also an assistant professor in the Department of Radiation Oncology at Wayne State University School of Medicine Wayne State University Law School Dean and Professor of Law Robert M. Ackerman served as the keynote speaker dur- ing the Stanley "Hank" Marx Lecture Series in Dispute Resolution Ackerman Oct. 20 in the Detroit- based law school's Spencer M. Partrich Auditorium. Ackerman presented a lecture titled "Astride Two Worlds: Lawyers and Other Professionals in Dispute Resolution" at the annual event, which is hosted by Wayne State University's Master of Arts in Dispute Resolution program. He has written extensively in the fields of torts, dispute resolution, communitarian theory and civic responsibility. Fishman Michael D. Fishman of Birmingham and Richard D. Forman is also professor of the Department of Radiation Oncology at Wayne State University, Detroit. Michigan Radio has appointed Tamar Charney of Aim Arbor to the position of pro- gram director. Charney joined Michigan Radio in 1997 and has served as Michigan Radio's Forman interim program direc- tor since March 2007. Her other roles at the station have included senior producer, on-air host, managing editor and pro- duction director. She helped produce the station's 2007 documentary Ashes to Hope: Overcoming the Detroit Riots, which won a 2007 national Edward R. Murrow award, as well as recognition from the Public Radio News Directors Incorporated, and several local and regional awards. Todd M.
