remain in Michigan because he got a
job clerking for Fred Butzel's brother,
State Supreme Court Justice Henry
M. Butzel. This led to a position with
a Detroit law firm for Joseph, and
the Jackiers became part of the com-
munity.
Joseph was one of the founders of
the Jewish Federation Apartments,
the forerunner of Jewish Apartment
and Services. He was a strong sup-
porter of the United Jewish Fund,
formerly the United Jewish Charities.
Later in his life, Joseph, who died
in 1987, served on the board of
governors of the Israel Institute of
Technology (the Technion in Haifa).
Edythe was president of Jewish
Family Service and the Federation's
Women's Division, among her many
community and charitable activities.
"I remember going to an emergen-
cy meeting with my father at the time
of the Yom Kippur War in 1973, and
watching well-known Jewish leaders
quickly pledging huge amounts of
money to help Israel without blinking
an eye Larry Jackier recalls. "After
that, and serving as national chair-
man of the United Jewish Appeal
Young Leadership Cabinet, I just
spread my wings and got involved in
all types of Jewish causes myself"

who also had been on the board of
