Some have been survivors for decades, others just days. But how many feel like they are thriv- ing? A new group of these women want to help other women feel like thriv- ers. The Cancer Thrivers Network for Jewish Women will host cocktails and conversation on Thursday, Oct. 23, at the Jewish Community Center in West Bloomfield. The 7 p.m. event will feature State Sen. Gilda Jacobs, D-Huntington Woods, who will speak and answer questions about cancer legislation concerning women and cancer. The charge is $10. Reservations are requested. The Cancer Thrivers Network for Jewish Women's mission is to enrich and empower Jewish women through activities, friendship, resources, educa- tion and humor. The network women possess the attitude that good health is significantly determined by positive thought and action. The network welcomes women who have been diagnosed with any kind of cancer at any time in their lives. Young or old, each woman has the opportunity to offer support and hope to each other. The network receives support from the Jewish Community Center of Metropolitan Detroit, Jewish Family Service of Metropolitan Detroit and the Greater Detroit Chapter of Hadassah. It welcomes support from other commu- nity organizations and individuals. Network co-chairs are Patti Nemer of West Bloomfield, Michelle Passon of Commerce and Sandy Schwartz of Franklin. To make a reservation, contact Patti Nemer, (248) 790-5854, or Michelle Passon, smp1543@comcast.net . 111 Photographer Aids Gilda's When a childhood friend was diag- nosed with breast cancer at 34, Ally Cohen was floored. The friend had no family history, was in good health and had no apparent reason or cause for such a devastating diagnosis. "I felt so helpless:' said Cohen, whose West Bloomfield company, Frameable Faces, specializes in pho- tography at competitive prices. "I can't cure her, but I also couldn't stand by and do nothing. So I decided to run a promotion. I'll donate 15 per- cent of my gross sales in November, my friend's birthday month, to Gilda's Club Worldwide, in an effort to stimu- late research and treatment efforts toward an eventual cure." Free of charge, Gilda's Clubs offer support and networking groups, lec- tures, workshops and social events for men, women and children, their fami- lies and friends in a nonresidential, homelike setting. Created in 2004, Frameable Faces provides photography for all ages and occasions, from family photos to cor- porate events to weddings. Cohen does not charge a session fee.
