Outdoor lighting also includes landscape lighting and accent lighting. Together, the lights make homes look more attractive and safer. _Design experts recommend the following to make the most out of outdoor living experience through lighting: • Coordinate lighting styles through- out the yard for a cohesive look. Matching deck lights, path lights, garden accessories and other specialty landscape lighting fixtures helps cre- ate a cohesive and enhanced style and mood. - Create a focal point that highlights an outdoor motif Just as a chandelier creates focus in a foyer, the right light in the right spot can highlight any area of the back yard. • Use outdoor lamps to add atmo- sphere and build ambience. • Opt for easy-to-install, low-voltage lighting systems. Using just 12 volts of electricity, low-voltage lighting out- shines even solar lighting as it throws the light better. Low-voltage systems can control when the lights turn on or off. "Most manufacturers are making fixtures primarily for incandescent bulbs, while some manufacturers are making decorative fluorescents," says Mike Belesky, the sales manager of Pine Tree Furniture & Lighting in Lake Orion. "You can screw a fluorescent light bulb into most normal light fix- tures to replace a 60-watt incandescent bulb. Fluorescent is a few dollars more upfront but you save in the cost of energy, and the bulb on average lasts longer than incandescents, several years compared to 750 hours?' Despite the inevitable move to fluo- rescents, many of Pine Tree Fixtures' customers still prefer incandescent bulbs, Belesky says. "They remember when fluorescents would flicker and blink when turned on. But fluorescents are much better now; the public will have to be educated?' In addition to its leisure and relax- ation advantages, outdoor lighting increases home security, says Joyce Begnoche, owner of Haig Electric, a retail and wholesale lighting fixture store in Clinton Township. She hangs wall lanterns on either side of her front door at her Warren home, her garage door, side door and back door wall. "They are not annoyingly over- bright and don't make my neighbors complain;' she says. "They are decora- tive and pay for themselves very, very quickly?' Fluorescent lights are a better crime deterrent than motion lights, she says. "Motion light sensors go bad or can be covered up to escape detection?' She also recommends a lantern post on the front lawn though she does not have one. Like all other lighting fixtures, the available style options today can be overwhelming; every six months new styles and new colors appear. "You can get the whole house with the same lan- tern style Begnoche says. Fluorescent lighting comes now in warmer colors than the traditional blue and the cost of fixtures starts at $45. "Lanterns are much more fashion- able she adds. "Bronze and nickel and painted finishes have replaced brass and antique brass. Generally, every- thing today is cast aluminum?' The environmental impact of fluo- rescent lighting has mixed effects. The Department of Energy says lighting makes up as much as 20 percent of power consumption in U.S. house- holds. The Natural Resources Defense Council estimates that switching every home to compact fluorescent bulbs would prevent the release of 1 trillion pounds of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. Fluorescent lights are 90 percent energy efficient, nearly the reverse of incandescents. Although they contain poisonous methyl mercury, environ- mental groups contend that the energy efficiency reduces pollution by letting power plants relax. It's illegal in seven states (not Michigan) to dump mercury-laden flu- orescent bulbs with the regular trash. The National Electrical Manufacturers Association has pledged to cap the amount of mercury in fluorescents while Wal-Mart is planning to reduce the amount of mercury in its compact fluorescents by 30 percent. ❑ 24 Hour Water and Fire Damage Response In Home Cleaning Specials 4 2 7' Rooms* of Carpet cleaned 9999 5999 5999 Rooms* of Carpet cleaned Sofa or 2 Chairs* cleaned Expect the best...Expect the purple truck! *Some restrictions apply We're Your Leather Cleaning Specialists 1.-800-HAGOPIAN (424-6742) Rug Care Centers Oak Park 8 Mile W / Coolidge Birmingham Novi Ann Arbor 1429770 S.
