When it comes to outdoor lighting
fixtures, there's nothing new under the
sun, except for what's inside the fixture
— the new and improved fluorescent
bulb. Once unsightly and associ-
ated with offices or basement work
areas, fluorescent lights now come in
an array of sizes, shapes and colors.
They are cheaper and longer lasting
than incandescent bulb; and they are
environmentally friendly, for the most
part.
"Everybody is going green ...
everything is fluorescent:' says Jim
Gandy, a Farmington Hills salesman
representing some of the nation's top
wholesalers. He has seven lanterns
adorning his back yard.
The fluorescent movement is getting
a boost from government rules and
regulations. In 1992, the United States
implemented an international stan-
dard for energy efficient consumer
products called Energy Star that has
since been adopted by Australia,
Canada, Japan, New Zealand, Taiwan
and the European Union.
Energy Star carries much of
the authority of Underwriters
Laboratories Inc. Electrical equipment
carrying the Energy Star logo, such
as computers and kitchen appliances,
save on average from 20-30 percent on
energy output.
The only way outdoor lighting can
comply with Energy Star requirements
is to use photo cells and dedicated
fluorescent bulbs, but it varies per
fixture.
In 2005, California enacted Title 24,
requiring all new-home construction
to provide a significant percent of
lighting from fluorescent bulbs. Title
24 has been adopted by Wisconsin and
Washington State, but not Michigan.

night, is growing in popularity, requir-
