E

ducator, author and social
justice activist Jonathan
Kozol spoke at Wayne
State University on Sept. 26 about
his decades-long passion — much
based on his Jewish values — for
bringing equal access in quality
public education to children of all
racial and economic backgrounds.
The title of his presentation was
"Still Separate, Still Unequal: A
Teacher's Struggle to Transform Our
Public Schools."
The program is part of WSU's
Forum on Contemporary Issues
in Society (FOCIS) series initi-
ated last year by Irvin D. Reid,
former WSU president who now
holds the Eugene Applebaum Chair
in Community Engagement at
the Detroit-based university and
is director of FOCIS. About 350
people heard the lecture live; 250
Detroit Public Schools students,
teachers and parents watch via
video in another auditorium.
Kozol, whom the Chicago Sun
Times called "today's most eloquent
spokesman for America's disen-
franchised;' is a strong advocate
for integrated public education and
an outspoken critic of the voucher
system. He points to low graduation
rates, particularly in major cities,
poor performance on standard-

ized tests and the proliferation of
charter schools as evidence that the
public education system is failing
students to whom it should be giv-
ing hope and the tools for success.
And he rails at the inequities he
sees between rich and poor school
districts.
Kozol said that his Jewish
upbringing "unquestionably influ-
enced" his career as a public school
teacher, researcher and educational
advocate.
"The first time I heard Dr. Martin
Luther King speak, it was in my
synagogue," Kozol said. "At that time,
the Jewish people were great sup-
porters of school integration. The
strong core of ethical conviction I
got from my Jewish heritage can
help guide us back to the values we
have forgotten about. I would like to
see that again."
Kozol took a few questions from
the audience.
One person asked what advice he'd
give to parents to ensure their chil-
dren's educational needs are being
met in public school.
"Look at whether the teacher is
the kind of person that you would
want as a friend;' he suggested. "If
the teacher would make a boring
friend, he or she will also likely be
boring to your children."
