Rabbi Mendel Stein Special to the Jewish News 0 n the morning of Sept. 14, donors Gloria and Edward Meer gathered with their children, grandchildren and supporters of the Lubavitch Cheder in Oak Park to formally dedicate the school's Meer Family Cheder Annex. The Meers of Bloomfield Hills donated close to $1 million to renovate the 11,000- square-foot school building and add another 3,000 square feet of classroom and office space. There are 120 students in grades preK-8 attending classes in the building; the near- by boys' school, also in Oak Park, has 125 students. The Meers handed out chocolate treats to each of the Cheder children in honor of the occasion. As chair of the program, Dr. Noah Levi of Southfield called on Rabbi Daniel Moskowitz, director of Lubavitch of Illinois, to address the crowd. During Edward Meer's remarks, he expressed his joy at being able to help such a great cause. "I was especially hon- ored to meet with students of the High School Division who come from 15 differ- ent countries;' he said, calling it a sign of the global impact that his family's support of the Lubavitch Cheder will have. ❑ Rabbi Mendel Stein is development director at the Lubavitch Cheder in Oak Park.
