SPOOKY SETUP
Some 800 jack-o-lanterns, surrounded by a thick fog, provide the setting for
the Halloween celebration at Greenfield Village, 20900 Oakwood Blvd., in
Dearborn. Costumed characters, from wild witches to goofy - goblins, add to the
festivities extended over three weekends: 6:30-9 p.m. Fridays-Sundays, Oct. 10-
12, 17-19 and 24-26. Visitors are welcome in costume or everyday clothes. In
keeping with the theme of the village, the event will take guests back in time to
the holiday traditions of the early 20th century, with young and old following a
special path to experience some surprises. A headless horseman will ride by the
path, which also leads to a souvenir shop with T-shirts and Halloween collect-
ibles. Youngsters get sweets and treats as they participate. $12.75-$15; free for
those 2 and younger. $5 parking. (313) 982-6001.

WALK TIMES TWO
There are two good reasons to put on your walking shoes and step out in Metro
Detroit: the fight against diabetes and the fight against autism. The fundraising
battlegrounds are entertaining places, too. The Walk to Fight Diabetes loops
through the Detroit Zoo in Royal Oak for two miles and begins with registra-
tion 7:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 11. Participants will get a bagel breakfast, see
vendors showing items to deal with the illness, hear music selected by a DJ and
let the kids have their faces painted. $15. (888) DIABETES. The Walk Now
for Autism, one or two miles around the Palace of Auburn Hills, also offers
resource information and fun activities and begins 10 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 12. No
fee required; $150 fundraising goal encouraged. wwwwalknowforautism.org .
