They're accustomed to celebrating birthdays at Beth Hayeled Nursery School in
Southfield/VVest Bloomfield, but a 60th birthday celebration is certainly rare.
The secular and religious program for children ages 2-6, run by Congregation
Shaarey Zedek Oakland County, marked six decades Sept. 5 with a sports-themed
family Shabbat bash. About 500 people attended the celebration at the synagogue
in Southfield, which included a juggler, magician, food, music and, of course, lots of
birthday cake.
"We had a few three-generation families there; it was really fantastic," said Rena
Weintraub of Farmington Hills, Beth Hayeled's director.
The nursery school serves about 180 students; its goal is to develop the human-
ness, or menschlichkeit, of every youngster who attends.
"The dedication and love of our teachers, the constantly updated curriculum and
rabbinic involvement make the program such a success," Weintraub said. "We really
feel we are the foundation of the children's religious education; we give them roots
here."
