MARK FRANKEL ao,' • ft I May the coming year be filled with health, happiness and prosperity for all our family and friends. Ron & Marcia Kay Boca Raton, FL May the coming year be filled with health and happiness for all my family and friends. L'Shanah Tovah! A32 October 2 • 2008 Levin Factor from page A30 our children, and our grandchildren about the devastating effects of the Holocaust and other acts of genocide that have occurred and are continuing around the world. 7. Abortion I support the right of a woman, in con- sultation with her doctor, to make her own personal and private decisions about her reproductive health. In Roe V. Wade, the Supreme Court held that the right to privacy guaranteed by the Constitution "necessarily includes the right of a woman to decide whether or not to terminate a pregnancy" during the first trimester. That rul- ing has been upheld by numerous subsequent Supreme Court decisions. I am opposed to legislation that would overturn Roe v. Wade and weaken a woman's right to make her own repro- ductive choices. Embryonic stem cell research holds enormous promise for healing and saving individuals who suffer from debilitating diseases and injuries. In order for our scientists to do quality research to make advances in medi- cine, they must have access to embry- onic stem cells. Embryonic stem cell research will allow our scientists to move forward to a new generation of potentially lifesaving cures. 8. Immigration Our immigration system is fundamen- tally broken and must be changed. We must secure our borders. Secondly, employers who knowingly seek to hire unauthorized workers should be sub- ject to the full penalty of the law. We must realistically and fairly address the millions of undocumented indi- viduals currently living and working here. Sensible reform should also con- sider the plight of the many families of citizens and legal residents split apart by bureaucracy as well as recognize that employers are having difficul- ties finding a legal workforce to do jobs that many Americans have been unwilling to do. We must protect American workers while ensuring that American employ- ers have the legal workforce they need to compete in the global market. 9. Michigan Currently, our companies are not competing with other companies; they are competing with other countries because of unfair trade policies. We need to combat currency manipula- tion by other countries, which in effect subsidizes their products while making American products more expensive. These policies have led to a manufacturing meltdown. To address these issues and revital- ize this ailing industry, my Democratic colleagues and I have proposed a comprehensive plan, the American Manufacturing Initiative, which brings together government, private industry and academia to provide incentives, healthcare support, advanced vehicle development, fuel and biofuel con- servation as well as defense industry initiatives. 10. Humanitarian Outreach I am a strong supporter of the Food Stamp Program, Women and Infant Children, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, and programs to assist the homeless such as the Runaway and Homeless Youth Act program, the Education for Homeless Children and Youth program, and the Grants for the Benefit of Homeless Individuals. I will continue to support long- standing programs such as the low income housing tax credit, which incentivizes development of afford- able housing for low-income residents. I also believe that, as the cost of health care continues to dramatically increase, we, as a nation, must work together to reform the health care system. 11.Intergroup Relations/ Campus Unrest I have long been a supporter of hate crimes legislation that protects individuals from crimes of violence committed because of a person's race, color, religion or national origin. We have an obligation to make America a fully inclusive nation and we cannot tolerate violent acts against individu- als because of who they are. 12. Senate Service In the Senate, I sit on a number of committees, including: the Armed Services Committee, which I chair, the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, and the Small Business and Entrepreneurship Committee. I also chair the Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations and serve as an ex-officio member of the Intelligence Committee. In addition, I am the co-chair of the Great Lakes Task Force, and also I am a member of the Smart Growth Task Force, Senate Auto Caucus and the Senate Auto Parts Task Force. ❑
