I lc,

--

n Sunday, Sept. 21, young
American Jewish fami-
lies came together at the
Fleischman Residence/Blumberg
Plaza in West Bloomfield to prepare
Rosh Hashanah gifts for Holocaust
survivors in the Detroit area through
the Program for Holocaust Survivors
and Families of the Jewish Home &
Aging Services. The treats included
New Year's cards created by the chil-
dren and sweets such as apples, jars of
honey, apple cider and a potted plant
to celebrate the new year.
Survivors from West Bloomfield,
Southfield and Oak Park received their
guests into their homes and, in turn,
offered them refreshments. One sur-
vivor, 97 years old, was overwhelmed
with joy to see five young children
including a 3-month-old baby, with
their mothers, come to visit him at
his apartment at Jewish Apartments
& Services' Hechtman Apartments
in West Bloomfield. He offered them
chocolates and repeatedly said, "I don't
know what I did to deserve something
as wonderful as this."
One family member reported that
her daughter who is typically taken
up with her friends said that this was
the happiest day of her life. Another
very young child told her mother that
her special friend lived in a "Barbie
House!""My 'grandma has the cool-
est wallpaper; the walls are pink; they
have sparkles in them, and the carpet
is green like grass:'

Another widowed survivor prepared
cookies for her visiting family. She
delighted in preparing a package of
her cookies for the children. The sur-
vivor was so very touched when the
visiting mother and her children told
her that they loved her.
Another survivor and her brother
were thrilled to see a young Jewish
couple from Huntington Woods with
their three young daughters visit them
in their apartment in Oak Park. The
survivor has been caring for her ill
brother for many months. Seeing the
two young girls and hearing the baby,
loudly cooing, in their apartment
brought much joy and delight.
The Rosh Hashanah project was
the second in a series of events of
Mishpoch-Chai, a family enrichment
program of Program for Holocaust
Survivors and Families, a service of the
Jewish Home &Aging Services.
The next formal event will be an
upcoming Chanukah celebration. The
families intend to keep in touch on a
regular basis with one another.
The program chairs of Mishpoch-Chai
are Molly Chernow and Nikki Raimi;
staff members include Dr. Charles Silow
and Sharon Silver Teweles.
