Dear
Bar ,
n you
explain what
body composi-
tion is and its
relationship to
body weight? Thanks, Doran.

A.

riswer: Dear Doran, The
term "body composi-
tion" is the term used to
describe the relative percentage
of fat, bone, and muscle in human
bodies. It is most often expressed
in terms of "fat and lean," where
lean encompasses bone and
muscle, while fat (not surpris-
ingly) relates to body fat.

Many believe that body compo-
sition is a better measure than
weight is of a body's appropriate
healthy size. The National
Institute of Health (NIH)
recommends that a healthy
adult female body be
\\
, c, made up of between 20%
and 25% fat, while a
healthy adult male's
should be comprised of
between 13% and 17%
body fat.

• Floating the body in a large
tank of water to determine
buoyancy;
• Using bioelectrical impedance

I hope this answers your question.
