nswer: Dear Rose, Pome-
granate is the fruit from
a small deciduous bush
or tree native to Asia, which is
now cultivated over the entire
Mediterranean region. It was
introduced into Latin America
and California by Spanish settlers
around 1770.

Indeed, pomegranate is
now included in a category
of fruits known as "super
‘4',/
fruits," a food marketing
term for fruits that com-
bine high taste, nutri-
)
ents, and antioxidants.

Pomegranates are tra-
ditionally eaten on the
second night of Rosh
Hashanah and serve as
the "new fruit," i.e., fruit
not yet eaten this season.

Among the reasons cited for
pomegranates as the fruit of
choice during Rosh Hashanah:
they are favorably depicted in the
Old Testament and are believed to
contain 613 seeds corresponding
to the 613 mitzvot (command-
ments) found in the Torah.

As food items, pomegranates can
be used (seeds) for garnish or in
salads, and as juice or sorbets.
Grenadine is the thick syrup
made from pomegranates. I hope
this answers your question.
