he Jewish Historical
Society of Michigan has
announced the appoint-
ment of Aimee Ergas as director.
Ergas was the editor of the annual
journal, Michigan
Jewish History,
from 1999 until
2002. Since that
time, she has con-
tinued to serve
the society pro-
fessionally.Ergas
Aimee Ergas
is a graduate of
Wellesley College
in Massachusetts and is currently
enrolled in courses in archival
administration at Wayne State
University. She is married to Dr. Tor
Shwayder; they are the parents of
three adult children.
"The Jewish Historical Society of
Michigan has so much potential to
document our history in increas-
ingly important and creative ways:'
Ergas said. "I look forward in 2009
to marking the first 50 years of the
JHSM together with all the wonder-
ful volunteers who make our work
possible'
At the JHSM annual meet-
ing this spring at Temple Beth El
in Bloomfield Township, Ruthe
Goldstein and Linda Yellin received
Volunteers of the Year awards.
A member of the JHSM advisory
board, Goldstein was honored for
her leadership in the Jewish tour
program, in which she is frequently
requested as a docent by commu-
nity groups.
Yellin, a member of the JHSM
board, was recognized for pio-
neering the popular Eastern Market
tour, for serving as docent for other
Jewish tours as well as for chairing
the JHS Book Fair Committee.
Newly elected co-president
Arnold Collens said, "With our new
director, our committed member-
ship and our many dedicated vol-
unteers like Ruthe and Linda, we
are looking forward to celebrating
our first 50 years in 2009, and con-
tinuing to inform and promote our
Michigan Jewish story in the next
half century"
