Divestment Law Passed
The Divestment from Terror Act, which requires all state government
funds to divest from "scrutinized companies" that are doing business
with state sponsors of terror, was passed by the
Michigan House of Representatives last week and is
headed to the governor for her signature.
State Rep. Andy Meisner, D-Ferndale, was one of
the bill's sponsors. "Now that my legislation is being
signed into law, no Michigan taxpayer dollars can
be used to support terrorism and the rogue nations,
like Iran, who engage in terrorism;' said Meisner.
"This legislation will put our citizens' minds at ease
Andy Meisner
that their money isn't being used for death and
destruction."
The state is assessing contracts that could be
affected by this legislation. To date, Meisner said, "we only know that
there are no contracts with Sudan."

Yom Kippur:
- Shelli Liebman Dorfman, senior writer
North America's Jewish Federation network has launched a non-sec-
tarian relief effort for victims of hurricanes and other recent storms
along the Gulf coasts.
The New York-based United Jewish Communities, representing
Federations and other organized Jewish communities, has opened
a mailbox to send donations to support hurricane relief efforts in
Louisiana and Texas devastated by Hurricane Ike.
All proceeds raised by UJC will go to help support both the Jewish
and general communities rebuild following Hurricanes Ike, Gustav
and other recent storms in the area.
"After initially assessing the storm's impact, we decided the tim-
ing was right to begin raising funds for a relief effort to help the Gulf
Coast;' said Fred Zimmerman, who chairs UJC emergency commit-
tee. "So many people, both in the Jewish and general communities,
were hard hit by Ike and by other recent disasters, and our continen-
tal collective system has proven it can make a major impact."
He added, "Initial relief will go toward short-term disaster needs
such as food, water and medicines and for more intermediate needs
such as mental-health and other counseling. Other needs will be
determined as officials continue to assess the overall impact of this
and other recent storms."
In 2005, the UJC/Federation system raised nearly $30 million for
Hurricane Katrina relief.

Water
•Do not keep water running while hand washing dishes.
•Reuse water used for boiling as a soup base.
•Use cold-water detergents and cold water. Only the greasi-
est of clothing needs water warmer than 80 degrees. Cold-
water washing techniques can save you from $5 to $10 each
month.
•Wear clothes until they actually need to be washed.
•Wait for a full load before washing clothes.
•Wash car on grass or gravel so runoff does not go directly
into the sewer system.
•Do not leave the water running while washing the car.
•Wash car with buckets of water instead of running water.
•Do not water plants if they do not really need it.
