2005 fantasy film Zathura, was
born into an Orthodox Jewish
family in New York. His unusual
last name is Egyptian-Jewish
in origin.
Former child actor Joseph
Gordon-Levitt, 27, has a sup-
porting role in
Spike Lee's new
film, Miracle at
St. Anna, also
opening on
Sept. 26. The
film begins in
1983 with what
Joseph
seems like a
Gordon-Levitt
cold-blooded
murder in New
York and unfolds in flashback.
The historical events that led
to the murder are eventually
revealed.
Gordon-Levitt plays a
reporter who investigates
the murder and discovers a
priceless Italian artifact in
the murder suspect's apart-
ment. This artifact leads to an
almost forgotten all-black U.S.
Army division that fought in
World War II. Most of the film
covers the adventures of four
African-American soldiers who
are members of this division.
Stationed in Italy, they find
themselves trapped behind
enemy lines and separated
from their unit after one of
them risks his life to save an
Italian boy.
Eagle Eye, opening Sept. 26,

stars Shia LaBeouf, 22, as a
slacker who returns home after
the mysterious death of his
successful twin brother. He and
his single mother learn they've
been framed as terrorists,
and they are threatened into
becoming members of a cell
assigned to kill a politician.
Eli Attie, who helped write
Eagle Eye, was Al Gore's chief
speechwriter in 2000. Attie
also wrote for The West Wing
TV series and, in a newspaper
interview reposted on the offi-
cial Barack Obama campaign
Web site, explains how Obama
inspired and influenced the
writing of West Wing charac-
ter Matthew Santos (Jimmy
Smits), a Hispanic-American
running for president.
In 2004, Attie called
Obama's chief aide and asked
how the senator dealt with the
issues of race and identity. The
aide's answers helped shape
the episodes in which Santos
dealt with his Hispanic identity.
