John Health this month opened the new Providence Park Hospital in Novi, the first hospital to open in southeast Michigan in more than 20 years. The leading-edge medical center brings with it 1,200 new jobs and an econom- ic impact of $80 million annually. The 200-bed, $229 million hospital is the largest acuity adaptable hospital in the country, meaning the rooms are designed to allow patients to remain in one room throughout their stay. Typically in hospitals, patients are transferred to various units for each stage of their care, but a flexible design approach and ICU-like technologies in every room at Providence Park enables clinicians to deliver a model of care that minimizes patient transfers, increases safety and reduces health- care costs. "The impact of this facility will be felt far beyond Oakland County, as the technology and best prac- tices employed at Providence Park Hospital will be leveraged across St. John Health to fulfill our mission of improving the health of individuals in every community we serve says Dr. Michael Wiemann, executive vice president, St. John Health West Region. Specialty programs at Providence Park include neurosciences, ortho- pedics, women's services, cardiology, oncology and surgical services. The new hospital features a 24- hour emergency department with 49 individual treatment rooms. The entire third floor of Providence Park is dedicated to a comprehensive Women's and Infant Health Center, including 27 labor/delivery/recovery/post-partum rooms with sleeping areas for spouses and families, a 15-bed special care nursery, dedicated operating rooms, and a gynecology unit. Additional services will include state-of-the-art imaging technologies, catheterization labs, pediatric care and dedicated pediatric emergency services. The hospital was built with a distinc- tive onstage/offstage design, a concept learned from the Disney Institute, in which the patient, caregiver and materi- als movement are separated from the public via dedicated corridors and eleva- tors to ensure minimal disruption to patients and their families. Approximately 1/3 of the wooded 200-acre campus has been left in its natural state and will support walking trails and nature areas for the community. Other portions of the campus have been developed through private investments of approximately $80 million. This includes a physician-owned medi- cal office building that also houses a Neurosciences Institute and Surgical and Procedural Skills Lab; a physician-owned Novi Orthopedic Center that includes an ambulatory surgery center; as well as a 108-bed Staybridge Suites extended-stay hotel. ❑ New Hospital on page B37
