May the New Year bring to all our friends and family health, joy, prosperity and everything good in life. "Joseph's Song" by Gila Gelfond and whimsical — like the ones with the chubby, naked Adam and Eve or the Hebrew letters that spell out the English words: happy new year. Others of his are scenes adorned with Hebrew passages. Chuck, who studied in San Miguel de Allende in Mexico, is a seri- ous painter with a master's of fine arts degree. Harriet has studied art in Israel and at Wayne State University in Detroit and Oakland Community College. After 40 years, she continues to run the JCC's art departments. Her paint- ings for the cards are lyrical and sophisticated, joyous and detailed. Gila's art has a quality that speaks to the heart with its themes, color choices and subjects. The cards depict various Jewish holidays and subjects, but all express wishes for a happy, healthy new year inside. "This got started not as a business, but to continue a tradition of sending a new year's card to the community:' Harriet said. That's a thought that's as sweet as apples and honey. ❑ A Day For Women Cancer affects many aspects of life, often for an extended period of time; and cancer patients often wish for emotional support as well as medical information. Six years ago, West Bloomfield resi- dent Natalie Charach, whose own fam- ily has been touched by cancer, devel- oped the idea of a special day, "Just for You:' for women with cancer and their relatives and close friends. Charach is a devoted volunteer and donor at DMC Huron Valley-Sinai's Charach Cancer Treatment Center in Commerce Township. The hospital quickly embraced Just for You. The event will be held 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 3, at Edgewood Country Club, 8399 Commerce Road, Commerce Township. A physicians' panel includes Joel Appel, D.O., of Troy, medical director of the Charach Cancer Treatment Center, and Kimberly Hart, M.D., of Bloomfield Hills, HUSH director of radiation oncology. They will offer health insights specifically for women. With an increased societal concern about the environment and ecology, Mark Upfal, M.D., will speak about "Lifestyle, Environment and Cancer" Teri Sahn-Silver, a social worker, will discuss resources for cancer patients, and several cancer survivors will speak about their cancer experiences. In addition, Lori Mifsud, an occu- pational therapist, will demonstrate lymphedema treatments. Just for You will include information about the home environment and per- sonal appearance for cancer patients. Candy Rosowksi of English Gardens will discuss how to clean the air with tropical plants. Joan Haddock, a licensed aesthetician, will provide skin care information. Pamper stations and exhibits will round out the program. Just for You is a free program, but advance registration (1-888-DMC- 2500) is required.
