T

he Weiss Family Partners
in Torah program, whose
flagship Tuesday-night belt
medrash draws hundreds of Jews to
explore their heritage in a chavruta
format, is launching a sister division,
Partners in Care.
While Partners in Torah focuses on
the Jewish value of lilmod, to learn,
Partners in Care will focus on the equally
important Jewish value of la'asot, to do.
Designed for Jews of all persuasions and
educational backgrounds, Partners in
Care will bring to action the classroom
lessons of chessed, lovingkindness, and
tikkun olam, repair of the world, through
community projects.
Rachel Leah Black, coordinator of
this division, said, "I hope that everyone
in the Detroit Jewish community will
step up to this opportunity to do many
hands-on acts of kindness, making a real
difference and helping to strengthen the
many in need"
Partners in Care will host its first proj-
ect, a communitywide can drive, at a free
barbecue 1-3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 21, at
the Oak Park JCC Family Fun Fest. Cans
will be donated to Berkley-based Yad

Ezra, a kosher food pantry.
"With a 30 percent, year-over-year
increase in the number of families
whom we are currently assisting, it is
heartwarming to witness the outpouring
of support from organizations, business-
es and individuals in our community,'
said Lea Luger, Yad Ezra development
director. "It is clear that our community
truly believes that families not having
enough food to eat is not an option':
Partners in Care will kick off the
Jewish new year by gathering 3,000
cans of food. It will join forces with a
number of local organizations. The first
opportunity to partake in the "We CAN
do it!" drive will be at the barbecue; each
person who brings two cans will gain
entrance to the free buffet.
"There can be no better way to start
off the year, than by doing chessed,
enjoying a barbecue with the family, and
showing support and concern for those
in the Detroit community who need it
most;' said Black.
All cans must have a kosher symbol
on them. For information or to volun-
teer, contact Rachel Leah Black: (248)
JUDAISM or Rlsyblack@gmail.com.

Machon Speakers
Oak Park-based Machon L'Torah will
feature two prominent communal
leaders, Rabbi Dr. Tzvi Hersh Weinreb
and Rabbi Shmuel Dishon. The event
will begin at 7:45 p.m. Monday, Sept.
22. A buffet dinner will be served. For
information, call Arly Mandelbaum,
(248) 967-0888
Rabbi Dishon is a member of the
hanhala of Yeshiva Karlin Stolin and
chairman of Yad Yisroel, an organiza-
tion dedicated to rekindling Judaism
in the former Soviet Union.
Rabbi Weinreb has been executive
vice president of the Orthodox Union
since January 2002. The agency rep-
resents and serves Orthodox Jewry
through hundreds of synagogues
across North America and beyond.
During the evening, Rabbi Elazar
Meisels will be awarded the Pillar of
Torah award. Rabbi Meisels has been
active with the Metro Detroit Jewish
community for more than 10 years. As
the director of the Lidrosh institute,
he reached out to many hundreds

of affiliated and unaffiliated Jews in
various neighborhoods in addition to
his outreach efforts at Michigan State
University and Wayne State University
in Detroit.
