Adat Shalom Synagogue in
Farmington Hills will welcome
Rabbi Joseph Telushkin as the
congregation's guest speaker for its
opening SYNergy
Shabbat weekend
Sept. 19-20.
At 8 p.m. on
Friday evening,
following a
Shabbat dinner,
Rabbi Telushkin
will discuss "On
Being Jewish:
Rabbi
What
is the
Telushkin
Goal?"
Rabbi Telushkin, named by Talk
Magazine as one of the 50 best
speakers in the U.S., is the author
of many books. He is the spiritual
leader of the Synagogue for the
Performing Arts in Los Angeles.
Synergy activities will begin at
5:30 p.m. on Friday evening with a
Limud Shabbat service. The weekly
Kabbalat Shabbat service will
begin at 6 p.m., along with Shabbat
Shaboom, a lively musical service
for the younger set.
Rabbi Telushkin will hold a spe-
cial program for teens at 6:30 p.m.,
where he will discuss "Words that
Hurt; Words that Heal."
Childcare will begin at 7 p.m. At
7:45 p.m., Baffling Bill the Magician
will perform.
Rabbi Aaron Bergman will
conduct a Talmud study session
at 8:30 a.m. on Shabbat morning
titled "Rabbi Akivah Teaches Moses
the Torah." Traditional services
will begin at 9 a.m. Rabbi Rachel
Shere will hold a Mishpachah
Minyan at 10 a.m. Beginning at
10:15 a.m., there will be drop-off
youth services. Also at 10:15, Jewish
educator Ruth Bergman will hold a
session titled "Oh My God: Jewish
Approaches to Understanding God."
On Saturday evening, Adat
Shalom hosts the community-wide
Selichot program and service. At
9:30 p.m., Rabbi Telushkin will
speak on "Being a Good Person in
a Complicated World." Selichot fea-
turing local cantors follows.
SYNergy co-chairs are Carol

and Phyllis Pilcowitz of Bloomfield
Hills. The community is welcome
to all services and programs at no
charge, with the exception of the
Shabbat dinner for which there is a
