' Letters M.L. King Letter Was Bogus, But Thrust Is True Regarding the Editor's Letter "The Vigor Of Who We Are" (Aug. 28, page A5): According to a 2002 investigation by the Washington-based Committee for Accuracy in Middle East Reporting in America, it has never been authenticated that Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. ever wrote a "Letter to an Anti-Zionist Friend" or that such a letter ever was published in the August 1967 issue of Saturday Review. However, the basic message of the unauthenticated letter indeed reflects King's sentiments, according to CAMERA. In the letter, King is quoted as saying: "Anti-Zionist is inherently anti- Semitic and ever will be so" and "When people criticize Zionism, they mean Jews — make no mistake about that." According to CAMERA: In a January 21, 2002, op-ed in the San Francisco Chronicle, U.S. Rep. John Lewis, D.-Ga., who worked closely with King, shared the slain civil rights leader's views stressing Israel's democratic nature and Israel's need for security. Lewis related that King did say: "When people criticize Zionists they mean Jews, you are talking anti- Semitism." That authenticated quotation came from King's 1968 appearance at Harvard University in Cambridge, Mass. The extraordinary efforts and attention to detail were great to watch come togeth- er and an honor to be part of. Our family is still feeling the thrill of the Maccabi Games and nothing can compare to our Michigan State Fair picnic (Federation's "A Fair to Remember," which included the Maccabi athletes) with 16,000 of our brethren together. We only had one glitch regarding the weeks events: We attended the required orientation and our son brought up the logistics of a minyan. We were told that a morning minyan, along with afternoon prayers, would be worked out since one of the main goals was to provide the athletes with a Jewish experience. We were prepared to provide all of the Macabbi-required material comforts of our athletes. Upon the Maccabi boys' arrival, we re-inquired the availability of a minyan. We were told there was not enough inter- est; that's hard to believe with more than 2,700 Jewish athletes, coaches and guests visiting. Our one home had 6 of the 10 required for a morning minyan. The greatest mitzvah of all is to do a mitzvah without acknowledgment. Our Detroit community provides mitzvahs 24/7 without fanfare. We never thought that arranging a min- yan would be a burden to the already arranged flow of the Games. It was a heartbreak for us to see our boys davening without a minyan in our home in the very early morning since no minyan had been coordinated. We are still not sure why a minyan could not have been available at the West Bloomfield JCC at 7 a.m. prior to the day's activities. Hopefully, athletes, coaches and visi- tors will remember our community as a positive experience and forgive us for our not honoring their spiritual needs. Ed and Aviva Gordon and family Oak Park Here's To Maccabi Something wonderful happened last week in Metro Detroit. It was the JCC Maccabi Games. Believe it or not, my husband, Shelly, and I have never been involved in Maccabi; what a joy it was to be part of this fabulous happening. All the visitors to our city will go home to their communities and know that the people of Detroit are truly warm, wel- coming and great.
