Sherman is a graduate of the University of Michigan (B.A. with high honors in Hebrew and Judaic Studies, 1988) and of the Wayne State University School of Law (1992) in Detroit. He is the president of a law practice in Farmington Hills. Sherman served for two years as a certified instructor in the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary. He has served as a volunteer youth basketball coach at the Jewish Community Center of Metropolitan Detroit and has served as a member of the governing board of Hillel of Metro Detroit. During law school, Sherman served as a clerk for Oakland County Circuit Judge Steven N. Andrews and for William Beaumont Hospital Royal Oak.
