GERALYt
uring the Civil War,
Michigan's Jewish families
sent 181 young men, nearly
half of them from Detroit, to fight
with the Union Army. In World War II,
the Jewish families of Michigan made
an equal sacrifice, sending more than
10,000 soldiers overseas to fight for
the freedoms afforded by the United
States. Now, there is a place for the sto-
ries of those soldiers to be preserved
and recorded.
The Rabbi Leo M. Franklin Archives
at Temple Beth El in Bloomfield Hills
has been named as the custodial
repository for the archives of the
Jewish War Veterans of the United
States of America, Department of
Michigan. The collection will chronicle
the contributions and sacrifices of
the men and women of the Detroit-
area Jewish community to the United
States military.
Service-related photographs, letters,
diaries and the personal reminiscenc-
es of all members of the armed forces,
both past and present, are being col-
lected to help record this important
aspect of local Jewish history.
The collection will include arti-
facts and oral histories of those who
remained on the home front during
the war: parents of soldiers, brides,
girlfriends, etc. Their letters, photos,
diaries and recollections will help
researchers and historians understand
the entire war effort.
