Memorable Maccabi
Mazel Tov to the coordinators of the
JCC Maccabi Games held in Metro
Detroit last week. As a host family of
three baseball athletes from Baltimore,
we were able to witness the unbeliev-
able task of coordinating such an event.
From the time we picked up our
youth at the West Bloomfield JCC on
Sunday until drop off Friday morning,
Aug. 17-22, our Jewish community
shined big time. You could not help
to notice that every segment of our
Jewish population was present. The
seniors as well as the Orthodox were all
present. Our community came through
to make this commitment a winner.
My compliments to the endless
committees that made sure that every
detail was covered. Security and safety
of our priceless youth was foremost on
the top of the priorities. When security
had weakened, quick and well thought
out alternatives were put into place. No
room for compliancy was acceptable.
Guest families shared positive feed-
back regarding the warm hospitality
that was extended to them. This made
us feel proud that we were participating
in something quite unique. The visiting
families were surprised to see a hos-
pitality table in their hotels. This little
detail made them feel that we wanted
their visit to Detroit to be memorable.
Our athletes were very busy with
all the activities that were planned for
them. The athletes were excited by all
the new friends they were making with
this new experience.
I took the week off from work to
assist some athletes in having a won-
derful time. What we got in return was
much greater. Our appreciation to all
who made this event a huge success.

Maccabi Pride
This past week, residents of Teitel
Jewish Apartments were treated to a
truly enjoyable afternoon by some of
the JCC Maccabi Games athletes.
As part of their DOCA (Day of
Caring and Sharing) project, danc-
ers came to Teitel as well as all of the
other Jewish Apartments and Services'
buildings to perform and interact with
Ann Arbor
The Courtyard Sh12:60
our residents. These young athletes
from around the country and from
Israel exemplified tikkun olam (repair
of the world) in their commitment to
the broader Jewish community. They
actively participated in a program to
understand some of the challenges
of aging, and both entertained and
engaged our residents.
As they helped celebrate Israel and
Judaism through dance, they made the
world seem a bit smaller for everyone
present. Their conduct and enthusi-
asm should be a source of pride to
everyone involved in the JCC Maccabi
Games. Our deepest appreciation
to the Jewish Community Center of
Metropolitan Detroit for allowing us to
be part of this celebration.

Incredible Maccabi
We never thought our incredible
1998 Maccabi hosting experience could
be surpassed. Boy, were we wrong!
This past week was one of the most
amazing for both of us. Not only were
our six Los Angeles baseball players
wonderful, but so were their families.
Many of the boys were lucky enough
to have their parents visit to watch
them compete, as well as grandparents
and siblings. We spent a tremendous
amount of time getting to know all of
them through our house party, dinners
together and rooting together at all of
the games. We now feel like we have an
extended family in L.A.
All of "our boys" and their families kept
remarking about the beauty of our area,
as well as the warmth of the people and
welcoming they received from everyone
in the Detroit community. I do believe
that many of these kids will be seriously
thinking about applying to our Michigan
universities. They and their families loved
it here so much that they spoke of future
vacations and moving here.
Even if these thoughts fade as they
return to their L.A. homes, these con-
versations speak a great deal about
how wonderful our community is
— the people and the surroundings.
We should all be so proud of how we
made our guests feel ... like family.
