estivals fill the holiday that
eases the transition from sum-
mer to autumn — with high-
speed cars, art and gourmet foods in
plentiful supply. Here are the mainstays:

Arts, Beats & Eats
Arts, Beats & Eats in downtown
Pontiac will feature local entertainers,
including jazz-singing Jesse Palter and
the rock-centered Marcy Levy Band,
along with projects by juried artists
and all kinds of gourmet treats. Palter
appears 11 a.m. Saturday on the R &
B Stage, while Levy performs 8 p.m.
Sunday on the Americana Stage. The
event goes 4-11 p.m. Friday, 11 a.m.-
11 p.m. Saturday and Sunday and 11

Belle Isle Grand Prix
The SCCA (Sports Car Club of
America) Speed World Challenge GT
Championship is new to this year's
Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix, where
the American Le Mans Series and
the IndyCar Series are the hallmarks.
Running Friday-Sunday, Aug. 29-31,
the Prix opens 8 a.m. each day. While
some of the trials are free for observ-
ers, the races themselves have a range
of prices. Concerts add to the event.

Michigan State Fair
The Colgate Country Showdown on
Saturday, a Gospel Fest on Sunday
and James Otto, Crossin Dixon and
the Lost Trailers on Monday provide
holiday weekend entertainment at
the Michigan State Fair. Continuing
through Sept. 1 are the usual animal
displays and activities, carnival rides,
art show and contests ranging from
farm products to dance exhibitions. 10
a.m.-10 p.m. at Woodward and Eight

A Buccaneer Beer Fest is the Labor
Day weekend theme at the Michigan
Renaissance Festival in Holly, where
visitors go back in time with authentic
foods, activities, wares and costumed
entertainers scheduled 10 a.m.-7 p.m.
at 12500 Dixie Highway. There also will

Michigan Peach Festival
Picking peaches, competing with
peach recipes and eating peach prod-
ucts are at the center of activities
planned Aug. 28-Sept. 1 in Romeo
for the Michigan Peach Festival. The
event, concentrated in an area bor-
dered by 31 and 33 Mile and Powell
and Campground roads, also features
music, arts and crafts, carnival rides,
car show and planned walks. Amid the
peaches are wholesome and fun foods.

Hamtramck Polish Festival
A pierogi-eating contest is part of the
Hamtramck Polish Festival, which
features music, rides, art and children's
activities. Located along Joseph
Campau between Caniff and Carpenter,
the event runs 6-10 p.m. Friday and

Franklin Round Up
Franklin Village serves up paint-
ings, sculpture, jewelry, furniture and
more for Art in the Village, part of the
Labor Day celebration 10 a.m.-5 p.m.
Monday, Sept. 1, along Franklin Road
between 13 and 14 Mile roads. The
Franklin Round Up also will have a
noon parade, games for kids and food
