jN

imes definitely are changing
for composer-poet David
Berman.
The singer of his own words,
vocalizing in his trademark nasal
monotone, sometimes polished with
collaboration, would record and then
let the recordings go off on their own.
There wasn't much touring support
by him and his ever-changing group,
the Silver Jews. (Regarding the band's
name: As Berman told Jewcy.com
— "Political correctness was the topic
of the day when I came up with the
name. ... Despite all the professional
show business Jews who changed their
names, I'm going to make the name
stick out. So if you are counterintuitive
and a natural contrarian like I was in
1992, trying to be all conceptual, you
might choose such a name."
Now, with the band's sixth record-
ing, Berman is taking to the road with
a stop in Pontiac. The melodies and
lyrics of Lookout Mountain, Lookout

Sea will be at the center of a perfor-
mance 8 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 31, in the
Crofoot Ballroom.
"I've never set foot in Michigan, and
I'm always super-aware when I'm in a
new place:' says Berman, 41. "On the
other side, from the ticket-buyers' per-
spective, there probably are no other
15-year-old bands with six albums
under their belts that come through
the Detroit area for the first time.
"I can't even think of anyone I know
from Michigan although I know peo-
ple from all the surrounding states. It's
strange, but it could be just the place
I've been looking for."
Berman will be appearing with his
wife, Cassie, on bass, Brian Kotzur on
drums, Peyton Pinkerton and William
Tyler on guitars and Tony Crow on
keyboards. Their appearance rides
on some very favorable comments
from critics, including Ken Tucker of
National Public Radio, who describes
the new recording as "sort of country
rock, sort of art rock and sort of ter-
rific."
Tucker also recommends Berman's
