RABBI SAMUEL DOV BERMAN,
61, of Ocala, Fla., died Aug. 6, 2008,
at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville,
Fla.
Rabbi Berman was born in
Bomberg, Germany. He served
congregations in Springfield,
Mass.; Hamilton, Ontario;
Baltimore, Md.; and West
Bloomfield.
After serving seven years as
cantor and temple educator at
Temple Israel of Akron, Ohio, he
came to Ocala in June of 2001
to lead the congregation at Beth
Shalom.
Positions Rabbi Berman held
included: past president of Great
Ocala Ministerial Association,
past president of Interfaith of
Ocala, Fla., National Association
of Temple Educators, American
Conference of Cantors, and
singing group Heritage Trio in
Baltimore.
Rabbi Berman was very proud
to serve as a chaplain for the Ocala
Police, Sheriff and Fire depart-
ments, as well as the president
of the Marion County Stress
Management Team.
He had a special passion for
teaching Torah and all about
Judaism. In his limited spare time,
he enjoyed reading and watching
fantasy.
Rabbi Berman is survived by
his devoted and loving wife of
38 years, Dale Berman of Ocala;
daughter, Alisa Bendis and hus-
band, Brian Michael Bendis, of
Portland, Ore.; son, Daniel Berman
of Portland; his devoted brother,
Steven Berman and wife, Linda,
of Las Vegas, Nev.; granddaugh-
ters, Olivia and Sabrina Bendis of
Portland.
He was the father of the late Ari
Berman.
There was a celebration of
Rabbi Berman's life Aug. 8, 2008,
at the Top of the World Circle
Square Cultural Center, 8395 SW
80th St.
