Buy American
Michigan is in trouble. It isn't just
the economy. It isn't just the politics;
it isn't just foreclosure crisis. It's an
amalgam of them all and many more
things.
As hard as we try to diversify the
economic mix of the state, the fact is
we are firmly entrenched on the auto
business. We may not work directly
for the autos but we are all suppliers.
Doctors treat the families; retailers sell
to the families. We, our customers and
our friends are all suffering because
of the downturn in the American auto
business.
Our children are leaving the state in
droves because they can't find work
after graduation or see no future
in staying here. The drain on the
economy and stability of the Michigan
Jewish population is in serious risk.
Our synagogues and social service
arms are all feeling the economic
pinch. Members are dropping out
because the hardship of dues to their
family budgets. Subsidized dues at
synagogues are at an all-time high.
Our synagogues and Federation and
its constituent agencies often have one
of the Big 3 as sponsors at fundraising
events.
Given these events, why do our lead-
ers drive foreign cars? I am appalled
when I go synagogues and Federation
offices and see our rabbis, cantors,
executive directors, etc., driving for-
eign cars. The very organizations they
work for are feeling the pinch, and
they are adding to it by slapping the
very people they serve in the face.
It can be argued that some of the
foreign autos have plants and some
offices in the States, but the fact is the
profits go overseas. That money is not
reinvested here.
It's time to make a statement and
stop this insanity. Our leaders should
be buying the products that keep us
here working.

Show Time!
The JCC Maccabi Games stand for
Jewish pride and sportsmanship at
its best. One of the great things is that
the JCC Maccabi Games feel like a
once-in-a-lifetime event, yet our young
people have the good fortune of expe-
riencing it for four years. Thanks for
bringing the games, one of the greatest
shows on Earth, to Detroit!

A Horrible Swap
Has the government of Israel gone
nuts? The government recently traded
live Palestinian killers for two dead
bodies of Israeli soldiers ("Exchange
Backlash," July 24, A24).
All the newspapers are condemning
this uneven trade. Even U.S. generals
are saying a trade is one for one (one
live soldier for one live soldier or one
body for one body). Now the released
murderers will be free to kill Israelis
again. This is written up in every
newspaper in the country.
The prime minister of Israel must be
deposed, replaced and should be jailed.
His cowardly acts toward Israel cannot
be tolerated. Was he bought off? He is
involved in other scandals, too.
There will never be peace with
Palestinians because Israel loves peace;
Palestinians love war and hatred.

Corrections
• In the recap of the West Bloomfield
primary (Aug. 14, page A28), it should
have stated that in the 39th District
State House race, Republican Amy
Peterman defeated David Wolkinson
by 987 votes, not 87 (3,004-2,017),
and that Peterman is employed as an
attorney for the State Senate majority
in Lansing.
• In "The Best Of Everything" (Aug.
14, page B16), the birthday wishes to
Terry Brown should have included his
middle initial "T."
