Special to the Jewish News

R

epublican Arnold
Schwarzenegger and
Democrat Bill Clinton may
not see eye-to-eye when it comes to
politics, but get them talking about
art and a common, colorful world will
emerge.
Both the California governor and
the former president are fans of
Romero Britto, who will be featured
at the Jewish Community Center of
Metropolitan Detroit's Janice Charach
Gallery.
"JCG Goes Pop!;' highlighting
Britto's work, will open 3 p.m. Sunday,
Aug. 24, and include a guest appear-
ance by the artist. The exhibit runs
through Sept. 25.
In addition, Britto — whose bright
and happy Pop Art is in the private
collections of basketball superstar
Michael Jordan, Oprah Winfrey, Prince
Andrew and Martha Stewart — will
work with athletes from the 2008 JCC
Maccabi Games to create hamsahs,
Middle-Eastern hand-shaped amu-
lets, to be donated to residents at the
Hechtman Jewish Apartments.
"I knew we had to do something as
soon as I saw the fire at the Hechtman
Apartments',' said Gallery Director
Terri Steam. "Between the Sherrill
Berman Children's Art Fund, which
gives us so much opportunity for
programming, and Mr. Britto's art
and his love for children, I knew we
could offer something to the residents
whose apartments had been damaged

— something that would tell them
how much we care about them. We are
truly blessed that Mr. Britto is joining
us, and the kids are lucky to have the
chance to learn from him."
Romero Britto was born in Brazil,
then settled in Coconut Grove, Fla. In
1989, Absolut Vodka commissioned
Britto to create a bottle label, and his
career took off. Since then, he has
designed two commemorative stamp
collections for the U.S. Postal Service
(including one for the Olympic Games
now being hosted by China). He has
also designed for Disney, Evian and
Swatch, for the 2007 Super Bowl
pre-show and the George H.W. Bush
Presidential Library to name only a
few.
What attracted him to the Maccabi
project?
"I like very much my art being part
of the community," he says. He appre-
ciates the values this project reflects,
like caring and respect, he says.
In 2007 in London, Britto headed
the Pyramid Project, creating a 45-
foot-high pyramid in a series of work-
shops with teens — much like the
Maccabi project.
"Kids are very creative he says.
"They're not afraid about what people
think art should be. A lot of people
think art is only what you put inside
a frame, and it has to look like some-
thing particular. But creativity and art
could be all kinds of things." 11
