M

ichigan law now requires
schools to begin after
Labor Day. With this shift,
students are more than aware when
to begin wrapping up their summer
activities and get used to the idea that
they no longer have the luxury of so
much freedom.
Structure makes a comeback, along
with the stress of homework, pressure
to do well and fit in, and fixed wak-
ing and sleeping hours. The back-to-
school transition is tough; but year
after year, kids somehow make the
change.
Yet, some find it difficult to make
the necessary adjustments to their

lifestyles and routines.
"It's hard to get back to waking early,
getting back into homework;' said
Amanda Golsky, 17, of Farmington
Hills.
Others, like Brittany Weinstein, 17,
of Berkley, don't have as much trouble
with the transition.
"The shift happens every year, so I
tend not to dread it as much;' she said.
Still, a "one last" feeling lingers. One
last outing to the beach, one last time
to watch that daytime soap, one last
time to eat meals at later hours, one
last barbecue bash or simply reading
quietly on a hammock. Each person
has his or her own unique set of "one
lasts

Ease Your Way Back

T

he return to school can be a
very exciting time for both
teens and parents, but one
that also can invoke some apprehen-
sion and nervousness. These feelings
are very normal, so no need for alarm.
Try these tips to help make this transi-
tion easier.

For Teens:
• Be sure to begin your back-to-school
bedtime routine about a week or so

before school starts. Talk with your
parents to determine what time will
work best. Include time for after-
school activities and homework as
well as for whatever else you might
need to do before you end your day.
• Talk to your parents, friends or
trusted adults regarding any concerns
you might be having. Remember
excitement, anticipation and nervous-
ness is all a normal part of going back
to school.
• Plan for your first day. Think about
what you would like to wear, with
