ues-
tion:
Dear
Bar , hat
is the differ-
ence between
osteoporosis,
osteomalacia,
and osteopenia? Margaret.

A

nswer: Dear Margaret,
Unfortunately, the 206
bones that make up the
adult skeletal system are subject
to various maladies like the 3 you
mentioned: osteoporosis, os-
teomalacia, and osteopenia.

Osteoporosis is a bone disease
characterized by decreased bone
mineral density that leads to
increased risk of bone frac-
ture. A major public health
threat, osteoporosis afflicts
10 million Americans and
t‘/
threatens 34 million more
who have low bone mass.
Common recommenda-
tions are to maintain
proper body weight; in-
take sufficient amounts
of calcium and vitamin
D; engage in regular
weight-bearing and
muscle strengthening ex-
ercise; and avoid smoking,
excessive alcohol, and caffeine.

(

Much less common than osteopo-
rosis, osteomalacia (called rickets
in children) is a softening of the
bone due to defective mineral-
ization usually associated with
vitamin D deficiency. Osteopenia
is a condition where bone mineral
density is lower than normal.
Many doctors consider it a pre-
cursor to osteoporosis, but it may
also be a sign of normal aging.
Always check with your doctor.
