operating cost for its seven universities. He
said other challenges are faculty retirements,

updating the school's infrastructure and
fund-raising in general.
It didn't help matters when Technion's
teachers — whom Jackier agreed are
"underpaid" — joined the faculties of
Israel's other universities in a long strike for
higher pay this past year.
"Because of that, we lost an entire semes-
ter and had to cram two semesters into
one, including summer school, which was a
hardship for many students who work in the
summer to pay for their tuition:' he said.
Ironically, there were times in the 1930s
when Technion absorbed scholars and stu-
dents fleeing the Nazis — and the faculty
worked without pay so the institute could
survive.
