T
he ninth annual Michael
Golds Memorial Conference
on Attention Deficit/
Hyperactivity Disorder (AD/HD) is
scheduled for Oakland Community
College's Orchard Ridge Campus in
Farmington Hills Friday, Sept. 26.
Hours are 8 a.m. to 4:45 p.m.
The conference is again sponsored
by Michigan Children and Adults with
Attention Deficit Disorder (CHADD),
Oakland Community College and the
Michael Golds Memorial Fund.
This year's keynoter will be Yvonne
Pennington, Ph.D., speaking on
"Raising Amazing Kids to Adulthood
Even if One Has AD/HD!" Pennington's
son, Ty Pennington, is the star of
ABC's hit show Extreme Makeover
Home Edition. She has interviewed
many friends and family who knew
Ty, her and their family over the years.
She will share her struggles and suc-
cesses as well as the views of others on
what makes for good parenting.
Pennington will conduct one of
the conference sessions, "Unveiling
the Underlying Issues of AD/HD and
What to Do About Them:'
Designed for physicians, therapists,
educators, social workers, students,
adults with AD/HD and their family
members, the conference will cover
such topics as: "Cognitive Behavior
Therapy for Adults with AD/HD,""Ten
Steps to Better Career Decisions;'
"Accessing AD/HD in Minority
Groups;' "Knowing the Facts of Your
Life with AD/HD in Planning for
College and Success in the Real World:'
"Survival Tips for Women with AD/
HD,""Neurobiology of AD/HD,""Your
Defiant Teen" and "School District
Responsibilities Regarding Students
with AD/HD."
"We are pleased to be recognized as
Metro Detroit's premier conference on
AD/HD" said OCC Counselor Mary Jo
Schuster, one of the conference coor-
dinators."This year we have expanded
our presentations to 20 different sec-
tions by national and area experts on
every aspect of the impact of AD/HD
on individuals and their families",
Schuster noted.
This annual OCC event honors the
memory of the late Michael Golds
who struggled with AD/HD, was
academically successful for the first
time in his life upon enrolling at age
30 at Oakland Community College,
then graduated with honors from
Eastern Michigan University. He was
in his second year of graduate school
in Florida when he died in a tragic
accident.
His parents, Barbara Golds of West
Bloomfield and the late Jack Golds,
established a memorial fund at OCC
to help sponsor an annual symposium
to help others understand and better
cope with the impact of AD/HD on
their lives.
General admission for the confer-
ence includes lunch, and is $59 before
Sept. 15, or $75 at the door. Early reg-
istration guarantees a luncheon spot;
students presenting ID will be admit-
ted for $30.
