Obituaries Obituaries from page C33 ARTHUR C. ZIEF SR., 89, of Milbrae, Calif., died July 25, 2008. A World War II Navy veteran and a retired attorney, he received his under- graduate and graduate degrees from the University of San Francisco. He was a major benefactor of U.S.F. Law School, FHAR and the Arthur C. Zief Jr. Foundation, support- ing mentally challenged individuals. Mr. Zief is survived by his beloved wife of 67 years, Dorraine; loving children, Arthur C. Zief Jr., and Reinart (Dr. Eugene) Gelzayd; grandchildren, Dr. Bradford (Julie) Gelzayd, Dena (Keith) Tarson and Allison (Michael) Weinstein; great- grand- children, Justin, Evan and Lauren Gelzayd, Lindsay and Dylan Tarson, Phillip and Matthew Weinstein. June Walker, Aided Israel New York/JTA June Walker was in working mode last week. On July 21, she presided over a fare- well reception for outgoing Israeli U.N. Ambassador Dan Gillerman. Two days later, she led a meet- ing of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, which she chaired. Late in the week, how- Walker ever, tests revealed the cancer she had fought for seven years had advanced too far to allow for a new round of treatment. Mrs. Walker, of Rockaway, N.J., died July 29, 2008 at 74. Mrs. Walker, a former president of Hadassah, became the second woman to — Julius Richmond, Surgeon General Former U.S. Surgeon General Julius B. Richmond, 91, a pediatrician and pioneer in child development and anti-tobacco education, died, July 27, 2008, of cancer. Dr. Richmond served as President Carter's Assistant Secretary for Health and as U.S. Surgeon General from 1977 to 1981. As Surgeon General, Dr. Richmond reinvigorated tobacco control efforts through the release of the 1979 Surgeon General's Report presenting for the first time overwhelming scientific evidence of the multiple harmful effects of smoking. His survivors include his wife, Jean Berger Richmond, two sons and two step- sons including Michael Berger of Detroit. lead the conference last year when she replaced investment banker Harold Tanner. "Leaders of the United States and Israel held her in high regard and respected the person even more than the positions she held;' said Malcolm Hoenlein, the Conference's executive vice chairman. A respiratory therapist, former college professor and health-care administrator, Mrs. Walker was a longtime community activist whose involvement with Hadassah began as a teenager. In June, she was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Haifa in recognition of her years of work on behalf of Israel and in particular her devotion to health care. Walker rose through a succession of positions at Hadassah before assuming the presidency in 2003, a post she held for four years. Under her leadership, the organization raised $75 million for a $210 million inpatient tower at its hospital at Ein Kerem and completed a $48 million emergency medicine facility in Jerusalem. She is survived by her husband, Barrett; a son, two daughters and six grandchildren.
