LEAP to LA ("Disney And Jewish:' July
17, page C20) was indeed a wonderful
experience for local youth profession-
als in our Detroit community.
As your article mentioned,
LEAP (Leading, Educating and
Programming) to LA was the culmina-
tion of a two-year pilot program devel-
oped through the Alliance for Jewish
Education at the Jewish Federation
of Metropolitan Detroit (with fund-
No Ballot Choice?
In his first term in office, President
Bush published a list of requirements
for the Palestinian Authority to be
regarded as "non-terrorist:' None of
those requirements has been met, but
the United States still sends millions
of dollars annually to an organization
that still has as its goal "the destruc-
tion of the State of Israel."
Secretary Rice is now meeting regu-
larly with Israeli and Palestinian leaders
in order to come up with a two-state
agreement before the inauguration
of the next U.S. president. However,

ing from the Stephen H. Schulman
Fund). It has been a privilege and
honor to chair the Youth Professionals
Committee for the past two years,
working with our talented and under-
recognized youth professionals.
The LEAP program was created to
bring our entire community's youth
professionals — from youth group
advisers to Jewish family educators
to those working with our youth on a
daily basis in school or after-school
settings — together for professional
development, support and relation-
ship building. Participants attended
workshops and lectures dealing with
issues that affect all teens, regardless
of denomination, and were expected
not only to attend sessions, but also
assist in creating the programs.
The results have far surpassed our
initial expectations. Not only have
these amazing and talented youth
professionals worked toward profes-
sional development and growth, but
they have also built strong community
bridges across religious movements.
What were once considered "opposing"
youth groups are now working togeth-
er, side by side, for the betterment of
all our youth.
Our community needs and deserves
more committed youth professionals,
and programs such as LEAP will help
ensure their continued growth, appre-
ciation and respect, which ultimately
benefit our entire community.

Maccabi Volunteers
About 18 months ago, we were asked
to chair the Detroit housing committee
for the JCC Maccabi Games 2008, Aug.
17-22.
After we said yes, we were informed
that about 2,100 Jewish visiting athletes
would be attending from the United
States, Canada, Hungary, Venezuela,
Mexico, Israel and Great Britain.
We wondered on more than one
occasion, would there be enough
homes for all of our guests? We never
should have doubted our wonderful
Jewish community. You have risen to
the challenge and we have surpassed
our goal of host families.
We do not have the words to thank
you for opening your hearts and
homes to our young visitors. We are so
proud to be a part of this community
— a community always ready to step
up and help when needed.
Now that we have reached this goal,
we hope you will consider being a vol-
unteer. There are still 1,500 volunteer
positions open. With 14 sports repre-
sented and as many as 25 tournaments
going on at any given time, there will
be volunteers needed all week long.
To register as a volunteer please go
to www.2008Detroit.org or call the
Maccabi office at (248) 432-5500.
Again, on behalf of the JCC Maccabi
Games 2008 and all of our visitors
coming from near and far, please
accept our deepest gratitude for your
hospitality and generosity.
