were about through watching so many
movies.
"I actually learned skills from
Robert Skotak, assistant manager at
the Livonia Cinema when I was there,
and his brother, Dennis. We became
fast friends, and I joined them making
movies as a hobby. They went on to
win Academy Awards!"
Greenberg, who took journalism
classes at Schoolcraft College, did some
freelance writing for the Detroit News.
To nurture his camera interests, he vol-
unteered to help Dear do a low-budget
motorcycle film.
"I went to a local camera rental shop
and started learning the equipment to
be a camera assistant:' says Greenberg,
perpetually keeping up with new tech-
nology. "I really worked my way into
the business!'
Early jobs involved auto industry
work as well as assignments for local
news programs.
After being hired to work on
Detroit-made films in the 1970s,
Greenberg decided to move to
California, where music videos were
getting started. Michael Jackson,
Prince and the Monkees were among
his subjects.
"The good thing about music vid-
eos is that it gives you a chance to
explore, experiment and try things that
could be used for a feature film," says
Greenberg, who has to be aggressive
about finding jobs in this competi-
tive field. "A lot of changes take place
because it's not nearly as structured as
a feature film!'
When Greenberg was doing filming
for Playboy TV programs, he was sent

to Tokyo for one project. A pay-for-
view assignment had him behind the
scenes for Farrah Fawcett: All of Me.
"I've worked for Playboy since the
1980s:' he says. "In filmmaking, people
deal with nudity all the time. I just
approach it as a job. My wife, Ginger, is
a former actress so she didn't give any
of it a second thought!'
Although Greenberg has not done
any work with Jewish themes, he
enjoyed shooting a music video
for Jewish saxophonist Kenny G. In
between takes, the musician liked to
rattle off Jewish folksongs he remem-
bered from Hebrew school.
Greenberg, who had his bar mitz-
vah at Temple Beth El in Bloomfield
Township, returns to Michigan at least
once a year to visit family. The son of
Harriet (Terry) Greenberg of Livonia
and Sidney Greenberg of Southfield,
the cinematographer has a brother and
two sisters.
"It was fun to put a little of my back-
ground into the new film; Greenberg
says. "Each ballpark where the kids
were playing had advertising signs
around the outfield, and I asked people
in the art department if they could
make one for me.
"The sign reads, `Sid Green Home
Improvements' and is a shout-out to
my dad. Like the coach in the movie,
he had to face the reality of some dis-
crimination and used the name Sid
Green in business!' El

The Perfect Game, rated PG,

opens Friday, Aug. 8, in Detroit-
area theaters.
