ACCOLADES are always welcomed at
Platinum, so when we earn them, I like to
let everyone know. The lovely-to-look-at
page designs that appear in Platinum every
month, due largely to the award-winning
creative efforts of Creative Director Deborah
Schultz and Senior Graphic Designer Lindsay
Schwartz, often are rooted in the artistry of a
talented stable of photographers. Among them
is staff photographer Armando Rios, who last month won a second-
place prize for a Platinum photo from the Washington, D.C.—based
American Jewish Press Association. The photo appeared on the June
2007 cover of Platinum as a lead for the story "A Salon Of His Own,"
which visited four local old-fashioned barber shops catering to men.
Featuring Jason Kavlitz, the owner of the Chop Shop in Berkley,
trimming the locks of Ken Litvin of Berkley, the image has long been
a favorite of mine, and I'm thrilled to see Armando getting the recog-
nition he deserves.
