How to Send Letters
We prefer letters relating to JN articles. We reserve the right to edit or reject letters. Letters of
225 words or less are considered first. Longer ones will be subject to trimming. Letter writers
are limited in frequency of publication. Letters must be original and contain the name, address
and title of the writer and a day phone number. Non-electronic copies must be hand signed.
Send letters to the JN: 29200 Northwestern Highway, Suite 110, Southfield, MI 48034; fax (248)
304-8885; e-mail, letters@the jewishnews.com . We prefer e-mail.
Teen Worth Watching
We were delighted to see one of our
recent Andover graduates, Corey
Berkowitz, featured in your cover story
"4 Teens to Watch" (July 17, B1).
Corey is clearly well-prepared to
make his professional broadcasting
dreams come true given his initia-
tive with WJEW at Temple Israel in
West Bloomfield and his extensive
experience with our student station at
Andover, WBFH, aka the Biff.
Besides the accomplishments you
noted, Corey was integral to the Biff
being named station of the year for
two consecutive years. He has been
recognized by the Michigan Association
of Educational Broadcasters, and took
two first-place awards this year for talk
show and promotional announcement.
Young adults such as Corey and
the others that you featured are an
inspiration. While we are honored and
privileged to know and serve many out-
standing students in our district every
day, ifs gratifying to see young people
be recognized by the larger community.
Congratulations on reminding
readers that our future in southeast
Michigan and beyond is hopeful.
agency endowment distributions and
various Federation funds that were
raised at other times and allocated on
behalf of local agencies. This brought
the total available to $28,684,275, not
$25,874,775, as reported.
The variances from the 2007-08 to
2008-09 in the total funds available to
local agencies are due to market fluctu-
ations and time-limited grants reflected
in the "other funds." They are not due to
decreased allocations from Federation's
Campaign. None of our vital agencies
or programs received decreased fund-
ing from the Campaign. In fact, an
additional $3.24 million — 12 percent
over last year — was allocated locally
to support communal priorities and
needs, including helping individu-
als and families in crisis, supporting
our older adults and ensuring Jewish
continuity through support for Jewish
education in our day and congrega-
tional schools.

Behind Variances
We were pleased to see your story on
the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan
Detroit's 2008-2009 Budget and
Allocations Report ("Holding the Line
July 24,A13), and Federation's efforts to
address the impact of the economic cri-
sis on Jewish families in Michigan and
throughout the world.
The chart accompanying the story
did not give the full picture of this
year's Federation allocations, espe-
cially to local needs. As the table in
the Jewish News indicated, Federation
raised $42,219,500: $34,000,000 for the
Annual Campaign and $8,219,500 for
the Rebecca and Gary Sakwa Challenge
Fund to help financially distressed
families and youth-at-risk both in our
community and in Israel.
An estimated additional $6,083,301
of "other funds" was made available
through federal and state grants,
